The best attended School Games competition was once again the Year 5/6 Tag Rugby with 36 schools in attendance at Overton Rugby Club on Wednesday 20th May.

A lot of excellent rugby was played during the group stages and the weather just about held, apart from one downpour that had everyone huddled under gazebos until one really grey cloud passed.

Towards the end of the competition the semi-finals pitched Sherborne St John against Vernham Dean and Hatch Warren against St Martin’s.

Both games were very close with Sherborne winning by the odd try against Vernham Dean and the same outcome meaning that Hatch Warren overcame St Martin’s.

The next game was the 3rd/4th place play off between St Martin’s and Vernham Dean. This game had more resting on it than just the bronze medals as the team finishing third also qualified for the Hampshire Games along with the two finalists. Again the game was very close and this time St Martin’s just came out on top to finish third.

The final then took place between Sherborne and Hatch Warren. It looked like it was going to be close game as the teams both scored twice each to make the score 2-2. I was then that Sherborne showed their dominance to score 3 tries to run out 5-2 winners.

This was a remarkable achievement by a very small school.

Last year when they won our competition they also went on to win the Tag Rugby at the Hampshire Games so it is great that they get the chance to defend their title of County Champions in Aldershot on June 19th.
