The Year 7 boys competition for 2014 has been won by Aldworth who triumphed at the finals following the two qualifying sessions.

The first qualifying session took place at Costello and they were joined by Challoner, Cranbourne, Fort Hill and The Hurst with the top two schools going through to the finals.

This session was incredibly close with all schools winning at least one game. The last two games had all 4 schools still able to qualify. In the penultimate game Fort Hill beat The Hurst to claim the first finals spot. In the last game Cranbourne had to beat Challoner to go through, but in the end Challoner hung on for a draw meaning that they went through as group winners.

The second qualifying session at Aldworth only had three schools taking part due to the late withdrawal of Everest. So Aldworth had The Vyne and Brighton Hill vying for the two qualifying places. The schools were to play each other twice.

The Aldworth team proved to be quite strong and they won all of their games convincingly. This left The Vyne and Brighton Hill battling for the second spot. Their first game was a 1-1 draw which meant that it all went down to their second game. This was won 3-1 by The Vyne who as a result qualified for the finals.

So Challoner, Fort Hill, Aldworth and The Vyne converged for the finals. The first semi saw a very close game between Challoner and The Vyne. There was nothing between the two teams but a single goal gave Challoner a 1-0 victory. The second semi was equally close with Aldworth beating Fort Hill 2-1.

Fort Hill then beat The Vyne 4-2 in the 3rd/4th place game.

Then the final between Aldworth and Challoner took place! Aldworth started incredibly quickly and scored within the first few seconds of the start. They soon made it 2-0 to put Challoner under a lot of pressure. To their credit they battled away and soon pulled one goal back. That led to a frantic last few minutes with Aldworth often managing some last ditch defending. No more goals meant that Aldworth had hung on for a 2-1 victory.

As winners Aldworth will now go to Soccer City in Fareham in the New Year to represent Basingstoke in the Area finals which includes schools from as far away as the Channel Islands and Oxfordshire.

We wish them well!
